MEXICO CITY (AP) — American Jessica Pegula will return to defend her WTA 1000 Guadalajara crown, organizers said Tuesday.
The 29-year-old Pegula has won a pair of titles on tour and is currently third in the WTA rankings.
The WTA 1000 of Guadalajara will play its second edition from September 17 to 23 at the Pan-American Tennis Complex in Zapopan, a suburb of the western city of Guadalajara.
The tournament, which will take place following the US Open, is the only one of that category to be held in Latin America and one of nine that take place this season.
“We are very excited for this second edition, the intention is, as always, to have the best rackets”, said Gustavo Santoscoy, tournament director. “We work hard to bring the tennis players we see every week fighting for the titles.”
The other venues for women’s 1000 category tournaments are Dubai, Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid, Rome, Montreal, Cincinnati and Beijing.
Last year Pegula defeated the Greek Maria Sakkari in the final in a disputed key that included Aryna Sabalenka, a semifinalist in this edition of Roland Garros, Victoria Azarenka, Petra Kvitova and Jelena Ostapenko.
So far, of that group, only Pegula confirmed that it will be on the courts of the Pan American Tennis Center.
