Bilingualism in Brussels Emergency Services: The Tragic Consequences for Cisse and His Family
2023-12-18 14:29:00
On August 5, 2023, Cisse, an 11-month-old toddler, was sleeping with his grandparents in Roosdaal, in a Flemish suburb near Brussels, tells the VRT. Suddenly, the grandparents understand that the little boy is no longer moving and call for help. A mobile emergency and resuscitation service (SMUR) then arrives from the Erasme hospital to save Cisse’s life, but it is already too late. When the team arrives, the baby has already died.
The grandparents try to understand, in vain: the caregivers present do not speak Dutch. From there, Karolien and Kim, Cisse’s parents who were present at a party, were informed that their baby was being transferred to the Queen Fabiola children’s hospital in Brussels. They therefore run to understand what happened to the toddler, but encounter the same problem as Cisse’s grandparents. Indeed, the treating doctor did not speak Dutch either. “You hold your child in your arms and no one can tell you what happened,” she tells VRT.
”Spreek je Nederlands?”: The bilingualism of our ministers under the microscope, find out who has the worst rating
To successfully communicate, Kim, the father, laboriously tried to switch from French to English in the hope of understanding the technical terms. But the translation is approximate and the parents end up concluding that Cisse choked on vomit. However, the reality is quite different. It was only 20 days later that the parents learned from Cisse’s pediatrician that the child had died suddenly.
A traumatic event for grandparents and parents alike, victims of the lack of bilingualism in Brussels emergency services. As reported by the VRT, the Permanent Linguistic Surveillance Committee has in fact received ten messages over the last four years regarding the lack of bilingualism in this sector. For his part, the Minister of Health Frank Vandenbroucke intends to investigate the matter. “I will really hold this hospital responsible and seriously, because I think this is a very big mistake in the services provided by this hospital,” he says, preparing to submit the case to the National Commission for patients’ rights. “I’m going to ask the following question: how can we adapt our regulations so that people can actually file complaints?”

The Evolution of the Calendar: From Roman Antiquity to the Gregorian Reform
2023-12-18 14:11:37
It seems completely natural to us today to have seven-day weeks and for each year to be 365 days, with the exception of the anomaly of leap years. It seems just as normal to us that each year is made up of 12 months with one anomaly: there are months of 28 days, 30 days and 31 days. All this does not come from nothing, it is the result of two things: on the one hand the historical heritage, on the other the phases of the Moon.
And if today, this functioning is completely integrated, it has not always been so. Moreover, in Roman Antiquity, the seven-day week did not exist, it only appeared in the first century following Jesus Christ. Previously, a year lasted 355 days and the following year 377. Julius Caesar will decide to reorganize all this and create the Julian calendar.
From now on, the year will begin on January 1, the months will be fixed as currently in 30 and 31 days with February which only has 28 except 29 in leap years. This calendar will be in force until the 16th century. But, there is a catch around leap years. In the Julian calendar, with a leap year every 4 years, this means that the average length of a year is 365 days and 6 hours. The problem is that the time interval for the sun to return to a position similar to what it was, is not 365 days and 6 hours but 365 days 5 hours and 48 minutes… Which makes a difference of 12 minutes per year. That is 20 hours of difference in a century and 8 days in a millennium.
In the 16th century, this discrepancy posed above all a religious problem. The biggest Christian festival, Easter, whose date in spring fluctuates depending on the phases of the Moon, is increasingly shifted towards summer. For Pope Gregory 13, a reform of the Julian calendar is necessary. He will ask astronomers to propose a new version of it: it is the Gregorian calendar. Adopted in 1582, this will slightly change the calculation of leap years.
But above all, to correct the errors of the past, the transition to the Gregorian calendar requires a radical reform: purely and simply removing ten days from the calendar. The contemporaries of this reform therefore fell asleep on the evening of December 9 and woke up on the morning of December 20. Creating a gaping hole, nothingness in the timeline.

Understanding the Benefits and Risks of Aspirin: Expert Insights and Recommendations
2023-12-18 13:33:09
Endowed with great properties, aspirin is the most used medicine in the world. “These actions are exceptional. It is an anti-inflammatory, a vascular protector. It is undoubtedly also an anti-cancer once morest colon cancer”, Dr. Christian Recchia recalled for Yahoo. Despite everything, it is important not to take it all at once. In fact, it is not trivial and its use must be regulated. “To the extent that this medicine has good press and is very easy to buy, aspirin, taken incorrectly with the wrong dosage, can kill you.”
Concretely, it can cause bleeding, gastritis, allergies or even inflammation, hence the importance of knowing the dosage appropriate for each use. “So, when you take aspirin at 50 or 75 milligrams, it acts as a vascular fluidifier which prevents the formation of micro-blood clots and therefore heart attacks.”

“A medicine that you must have at home”
On the other hand, when taken at 1000 milligrams, it acts as a major anti-inflammatory. Note that in case of fever, the recommended dose for an adult or a child weighing more than 50 kilos is 1 tablet of 500 milligrams to be renewed every 4 hours if necessary. Faced with this reality, Dr. Christian Recchia therefore emphasizes the importance, before each use, of seeking the advice of a medical advisor but also wishes to point out that this is a medication that must be kept at home.

As a reminder, aspirin should not be used in certain situations. It is strongly recommended not to take it if you have a history of allergy to drugs in the same family or to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs); in case of stomach or duodenal ulcer; in case of bleeding risk (during menstruation, predisposition to bleeding, etc.); in cases of severe liver failure; in case of severe renal failure; in case of heart failure not controlled by treatment. And finally, in pregnant women from the sixth month of pregnancy.
