The Rio de Janeiro Carnival begins with the coronation of King Momo
2024-02-09 23:42:02
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Amid thunderous applause, the mayor of Rio de Janeiro crowned King Momo on Friday, marking the beginning of the symbolic Carnival monarch’s five-day reign.
“I declare Carnival 2024 officially inaugurated!” said King Momo following Mayor Eduardo Paes gave him a gigantic gold and silver key. Confetti flew in a room of the City Palace, in the Botafogo neighborhood, where the ceremony took place.
Among the spectators were the typical protagonists of the Rio Carnival: revelers dressed as folkloric characters, jaguars, gypsies and “bate-bolas”, exuberant clowns with identical and meticulously detailed costumes who move in groups. The festivities will last until February 14.
Nowhere were the problems that recently plagued the tropical city noticeable: a dengue outbreak that a few days ago forced the issuance of a public health emergency decree; a federal decree to combat an increase in violence by militias and drug traffickers. In fact, Carnival is an opportunity for people to temporarily forget regarding their problems.
“Carnival is everyone’s passion here,” said Marcio Perrotta, who carried a huge fake ox head on a stick, its horns decorated with flowers. “I am happy to be part of this moment, because in normal life things are very difficult for everyone.”
Paes issued a decree Thursday making the key ceremony an official annual event, requiring his successors to participate. In 2017, former mayor Marcelo Crivella broke with tradition and did not hand over the key.
Momo, played this year by Caio César Dutra, is in charge of “presiding over the Carnival festivities, participating in the parades and costume contests, and promoting the joy of the revelers,” the City Council said in its official bulletin on Friday.
The Brazilian Minister of Tourism, Celso Sabino, also present at the ceremony, declared that 49 million people from all over Brazil will participate in the festivities, 6.5% more than last year.
Approximately 200,000 foreigners will arrive in the country, and many of them — scantily clad and covered in glitter — will join the street parties that occupy and dominate the public spaces of Rio, Sao Paulo and other cities.
On Friday morning, the Carmelites street party was already underway in the bohemian Rio neighborhood of Santa Teresa.
Leonardo Xavier, 20, dressed up as a blue-breasted Smurf. “We needed a quick costume that we might make on the subway. I said: let’s go smurfing! You just have to buy the paint, paint yourself, (put on) white shorts, and that’s it!”
For others, the highlight will be the samba school parades at Rio’s Sambadrome, designed by modernist architect Oscar Niemeyer and inaugurated 40 years ago.
Samba schools spend much of the year preparing gigantic floats and elaborate costumes to parade before millions of spectators, both present and on television. A jury evaluates and decides who is the champion of the close competition.

The incredible rescue of a constipated donkey thanks to coke: Joey had not eaten for several months after the death of his mother
2024-02-07 08:02:04
To remedy this problem, veterinarians gave him six liters of coke for four days through a tube placed in his nose going to his stomach. The donkey ingested a total of twenty-four liters of soda and the desired effect came as Joey was able to cure his intestinal problems! “In fact, the cola acted as a drain cleaner. It eats away at firm material and eventually softens it until it can pass through”, explains Jamie Forrest, veterinary surgeon.
The sanctuary where Joey comes from still explains that coke should not be given to healthy donkeys and that if it has to be administered, a qualified veterinarian must do it.
”Today, Joey has regained his joy of living”precise The Donkey Sanctuary.

CTC Infra expands portfolio with works for 5G and urban club
2024-02-09 13:58:18
With more than two decades of infrastructure works for the country’s industry and ports, CTC Infra expands its operations and begins to serve the new segments of digital infrastructure and urban clubs. The company is responsible for the construction of one of the largest data center campuses in Latin America, in Barueri, in Greater São Paulo, and an artificial beach in the city of São Paulo, in the Santo Amaro neighborhood, in the South zone. portfolio coincides with the adoption of the new brand, Constremac contraction, in line with the evolution of its processes and services.
This movement of CTC Infra follows the growth trend and emergence of new data centers, according to a study carried out by Arizton Advisory & Intelligence points out that this market should surpass the US$ 7.8 billion mark in investments in Latin America by 2026. Brazil leads this scenario, being responsible for 40% of this value. Furthermore, in a list made by Data Center Magazine, São Paulo appears in fifth place among the main growing markets worldwide.
The company’s engineering director, Rodrigo Melo, explains that in these works, the CTC Infra applies the same methodologies used in heavy infrastructure construction, which allows for a reduction of one-third to one-half of normal working time. “We brought the expertise we developed over 20 years of experience to speed up deliveries and enable customers to get a faster return on investment, under international standards of quality, safety and sustainability,” says Melo.
Melo says that the expected delivery of the campus to Scala Data Centers is 12 months. The works for the Beyond The Clubwhich will have a wave pool for surfing and courts for practicing various sports, will be completed in 2025. The project belongs to the group formed by BTG Pactual Asset Management, Realty Properties and KSM.
Rodrigo also comments that the Barueri data center will be one of the ten largest in the world, according to Scala. “The hyper-scalable data center market is expanding rapidly around the world to accommodate the arrival of 5G and will continue to demand work for the next ten years. This infrastructure is necessary for technology to take the economy to a new level, with a wide range of new services in the internet of things, telemedicine, streaming, autonomous cars and the integration of so-called smart cities”, he highlights.
According to the executive, the entire campus will have capacity for 450 MW of IT and 600 MW of electrical energy. To have a size of this magnitude, this total is equivalent to enough to supply energy to a city the size of Brasília (DF).
The objective of Scala is that the structure, which will have optical fibers, cell towers, data centers and mobile transmission cells, will be an artificial intelligence hub in Brazil. New digital businesses will demand a much greater amount of processed data, requiring new structures to house them close to large urban centers”, comments the executive.
When commenting on the Beyond The Club, Rodrigo highlights the 27 thousand m² wave pool, considered the largest in the world, and which has 62 motors to generate a wave every four seconds. In addition to a Skate Park of 1,000 m² signed by Bob Burnquist, considered the most significant name in the history of skateboarding in Brazil and the biggest X Games medalist. “We apply technology and expertise from the same constructions that we carry out on the high seas and on the Brazilian coast for large companies that are a reference in the country’s economy. It will be a milestone for engineering in São Paulo and for the entire surrounding area”, declares Melo.
“Both the digital infrastructure works and the club, which is a transformation of the city, highlight the recovery of the infrastructure sector and the development of the economy”, he concludes.
