Schwerte’s per capita debt rose significantly in 2024, according to new data, placing the city above the North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) average. The increase is driven largely by investment-related loans, according to reporting by Ruhr Nachrichten.
The city is exceeding the state average in both total debt and investment credit, the report states. Leandra Stampoulis, a reporter with Ruhr Nachrichten, detailed the rising debt in a recent article.
A separate report by Ruhr Nachrichten, published April 15, 2025, and reported by Newstral, highlighted a long-standing parking problem on Rathausstraße in Schwerte, with Stampoulis quoting residents frustrated with the lack of solutions. “Es ist längst überfällig, hier zu handeln,” (We see long overdue to act here) she wrote.
Stampoulis also reported on January 19, 2026, on a hit-and-run incident that occurred between January 7th and 12th on Agnes-Tütel-Weg in Schwerte. A 53-year-aged resident discovered damage to her vehicle’s driver-side door and front left fender. Police are seeking witnesses and have requested anyone with information to contact them at 02304 921 3320 or 02303 921 0, or via email at [email protected].
Stampoulis has also covered a separate incident involving vandalism in Schwerte, including a vehicle fire, thrown eggs, and defaced posters, according to Münsterland Zeitung.
The city’s debt development and increasing per capita indebtedness were reported on February 17, 2026, as part of a social ranking of schools in Schwerte, according to Ruhr Nachrichten.
