TALLAHASSEE, FL – Florida State University’s College of Music will begin accepting applications this month for a new Bachelor of Arts in Music Business degree, with a March 1st deadline, the university announced Monday.
The program, housed within a newly established “Music Industry” academic area, is designed to prepare students for a range of careers in the evolving music and entertainment landscape. According to Greg Jones, associate dean of the College of Music, the new degree is part of a broader effort to align academic offerings with current industry demands.
“The addition of this new program is part of an overall expansion to match career paths in the rapidly changing music industry,” Jones said. “Our partnership with the Herbert Wertheim College of Business, the Jim Moran College of Entrepreneurship and industry collaborators is vital for building bridges to career opportunities for our students. Flexible degree programs combined with professional mentorship across the spectrum offer FSU students exciting opportunities in traditional and emerging job markets.”
The curriculum will integrate studies in music, business, law, marketing, technology and management, equipping graduates for roles in artist management, music publishing, recording and production, touring, licensing, and digital platforms. Alan Blanchard, a specialized teaching faculty member in the College of Music, will lead the program. Blanchard brings experience in artist management and having worked on GRAMMY Award-winning albums.
“I’m excited to launch this new Music Business major,” Blanchard said. “I’ve been fortunate to have many inspiring mentors who have played a key role in shaping my career so far, and I gaze forward to paying that forward by mentoring students, linking them to real-world experiences, and creating meaningful, hands-on opportunities that fully immerse them in the music industry.”
To support the new program, the College of Music has completed the first phase of renovations to its recording studio facilities, providing students with access to modern production and collaborative spaces. Dean of the College of Music, Todd Queen, stated that the program reflects the college’s commitment to innovation and student success.
“The College of Music at FSU continues to be a leader in the field, offering innovative degree programs that are student-centered and providing a pathway for all students who want to pursue music as part of their career goals,” Queen said.
The launch of the Music Business degree follows the recent addition of Welling Gordon as Specialized Teaching Faculty of Music Recording, signaling a strategic investment in expanding instruction and expertise aligned with contemporary music careers, according to the university.
