CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. – The California Golden Bears secured an 86-75 victory over Boston College on Thursday, completing an Atlantic Coast Conference road split. Chris Bell led all scorers with 22 points, fueled by six successful three-pointers, as Cal improved to 18-8 overall and 6-7 in ACC play. Boston College fell to 9-16, with a 2-10 conference record.
The Golden Bears established control early, shooting 53.6% from the field in the first half and connecting on seven three-pointers to build a 43-28 halftime lead. Despite being outrebounded 19-15 in the first half, Cal’s efficient offense proved too much for the Eagles. The win marks Cal’s 18th of the season and provides a boost as they prepare to return home.
Cal continued its hot shooting in the second half, finishing the game at 55.6% overall. Boston College responded with improved shooting of their own, reaching 48.3%, but couldn’t overcome the early deficit. The Bears ultimately outscored the Eagles 86-75, despite Boston College winning the rebounding battle 35-25.
Bell’s standout performance was supported by strong contributions from John Camden and Dai Dai Ames, who each added 15 points, and Justin Pippen, who chipped in with 12. For Boston College, Fred Payne led the way with 16 points, followed by Chase Forte with 14 and Jayden Hastings and Luka Toews with 12 apiece.
The Golden Bears’ defense stifled the Eagles early, limiting them to just one field goal in the first six minutes, allowing Cal to jump out to a 15-4 lead. A 9-0 run fueled this early surge. Boston College attempted to respond with a 7-0 spurt, but Justin Pippen halted the momentum with a drive to the basket. Pippen later added a three-pointer, and Mantas Kocanas followed with one of his own, extending Cal’s lead to 27-17 with 7:50 remaining in the half. Chris Bell then ignited, hitting back-to-back three-pointers to push the Bears ahead 35-21 in the closing minutes of the first half. A late three-pointer from Camden extended the lead to 20 points with 1:49 left before halftime, ultimately ending the half with a 43-28 advantage.
Bell continued his sharp shooting early in the second half, adding two more three-pointers, while Camden hit another to quickly re-establish a 20-point lead for Cal. Boston College answered with a 6-0 run, but Nolan Dorsey responded with a three-pointer, bringing the score to 62-45 at the 12:10 mark. Scores from TT Carr and Bell helped extend the lead to 70-55 with seven minutes remaining. The Eagles managed to narrow the gap to single digits with 2:15 left, but Camden answered with another crucial three-pointer, giving Cal an 83-71 lead with 1:55 remaining.
