Tap Electric recently gained significant recognition by winning the pitch battle at the TNW Conference, impressing a panel of investors, industry experts, and media professionals with its vision for the future of EV charging. Nico Spoelstra, co-founder and CEO of the startup, articulated the company’s core mission after receiving the grand prize:

“If we want to accelerate the adoption of Electric Vehicles, we must ensure that driving, renting, or owning an EV is exceptionally affordable compared to other transportation options,” Spoelstra stated.

The Quest for More Affordable Charging

Tap Electric supports drivers in three key areas.First, it helps locate the least expensive charging stations. The Tap app enables users to find chargers, compare prices, and understand upfront costs. The app displays pricing facts for all public chargers directly on a map. Subscribers can access the cheapest rates and choose to charge through the app or using the Tap Electric charge card across the startup’s network of public chargers.

The system streamlines the process of finding the best deals. With diverse pricing structures, varied network configurations, and the increasing prevalence of dynamic pricing, the cost of charging an Electric Vehicle can be unclear. “We utilize a driver’s charging history to predict the price of their next charge at any station, enabling them to compare costs effectively,” Spoelstra explained.

Spoelstra shared a personal anecdote illustrating the benefits of the system. “During my trip to France last year, I did not plan my route in advance. I simply identified the next available fast charger before leaving my previous one and drove directly to it.”

Optimizing Every Charging Session

The second component of Tap’s strategy is optimizing charging sessions. Leveraging Artificial Intelligence algorithms, the company predicts optimal charging times and locations, maximizing value for drivers, with costs calculated in real-time during each session.

The app offers a suite of tools that convert complex data into practical guidance. Price Intel breaks down a single charger’s tariff, including any idle fees and time-based pricing.Map Intel provides a comprehensive view of the entire Dutch public network, identifying the most affordable operators and the most expensive ones. Tap Insights allows drivers to review their past charging experiences, assess the impact on their costs, and receive recommendations for cheaper alternatives nearby.

“We collaborate with Dutch public charging operators to extend this functionality to the public domain,directly on the street,” Spoelstra added. “Empowering individuals without private driveways to leverage their vehicle’s flexibility for more affordable charging is essential for widespread EV adoption.”

A third focus is on simplifying the software infrastructure behind charging. Unlike many platforms that have become convoluted and cumbersome, Tap automated processes from the outset, resulting in a lean and efficient operational approach.

“We pass these advantages on to our customers by offering free software for managing chargers and providing the most affordable charge card in the Netherlands,” Spoelstra stated.

Beyond the Driver: Addressing Grid Challenges

Spoelstra is optimistic about the progress of Electric Vehicle charging infrastructure but acknowledges ongoing challenges, notably concerning grid constraints and high energy prices.

To mitigate these issues, Tap collaborates with networks and grid operators to reduce peak loads.This approach enables more chargers to operate on existing cables, reducing the need for expensive infrastructure upgrades. The company also supports bi-directional charging, allowing energy to flow both to and from the grid, turning car batteries into valuable grid assets.

“The more we empower drivers to monetize the flexibility of their batteries, the better we can lower energy costs,” Spoelstra said.

Future Outlook: Deeper Integration with Energy Infrastructure

Spoelstra is encouraged by the rapid expansion of hyper-fast charging stations from companies like Fastned and Tesla. He positions Tap Electric as a complementary solution, guiding drivers to the most suitable fast chargers based on their needs.

The company’s future focus is on deeper integration with energy infrastructure. “Insights into price and power are valuable, but the true impact comes from our charge control algorithms that create synergy between vehicles, the grid, and energy markets. We anticipate significant developments in this area in the coming months.”
