US President Joe Biden falls at a ceremony in the US. This does not trigger the usual ridicule from his rival Donald Trump.
Update from June 2, 9.50 a.m.: Donald Trump has expressed surprising concern over the fall of Joe Biden on the Air Force Academy grounds. The former president was asked regarding his successor’s accident during an election campaign event in the US state of Iowa. “I hope he didn’t hurt himself,” he said, and instead of gossiping regarding his rival’s health or age, Trump seemed to understand. “The whole thing is crazy. You have to be careful because you don’t want that, especially when it’s a slippery ramp.”
Trump was thus reminiscent of a situation in which he himself was involved as President in 2020. At the time, he was attending West Point Military Academy and had trouble descending what Trump described as a “particularly slippery ramp.” The incident had sparked numerous discussions regarding Trump’s health at the time.
First report from June 1st: Colorado – A sandbag caused a moment of shock during US President Joe Biden’s appearance at the US Air Force graduation ceremony on Thursday (June 1). The 80-year-old tripped over the sack just as he was regarding to leave the stage at the Air Force Academy ceremony in El Paso County, Colorado, dpa reports. A bodyguard and an officer rushed to his aid and helped him to his feet. Biden himself pointed accusingly at the punching bag.
Biden then returned to his seat. He did not appear to have sustained any injuries: the White House declared that the President was “fine”. The politician from the Democratic Party had previously given a speech and presented diplomas at the graduation ceremony.
Biden is the oldest president in US history and is seeking re-election in 2024. This repeatedly raises questions regarding the health of the 80-year-old, who would be 86 at the end of a possible second term. Biden’s personal doctor had certified him in good health and unrestricted official capacity in February.
It’s not the first time Biden has made a name for himself with a fall. There have been a number of minor accidents over the past year. Shortly following his election in November 2020, he broke his foot playing with his dog Major. Then, in June 2022, he fell off his bike near his beach house in Delaware. The President had stopped to speak to passers-by and lost his balance trying to pull his foot out of the pedal loop. (jv with material from the dpa)
