LAfter his return to professional cycling at the Tour of Denmark and the Tour of Germany, Egan Bernal surprised with his announcement regarding a new operation to which he must submit as a result of the serious accident he had in January and that almost cost him his life. The Colombian will go through the operating room, but it is part of the initial plans.
In an interview last Monday with ‘Cycling World’Bernal made the announcement: “I have a material on my knee, pbecause in the accident I pulverized my knee, it broke into 6 parts and they want to remove it later until the season ends, following that I’ll go to recovery and I’ll start training”.
basically, the Colombian underwent surgery in February where some medical screws were embedded on his knees to give him solidity while the bone system recovered almost autonomously. Now they must be removed so that later they do not cause problems or pain.
Bernal announced that he will attend some small classics in his beloved Italy, then the Tour of Croatia and close the sports year with the monument Lombard turn. Thus, his operation would be in the last weeks of October and this would take a few months of recovery and further training.
Egan dreams of running the 2023 Tour de France in good conditionsso he can be given the license to start the next season a few weeks late for the sake of his recovery.
“Considering everything that has happened to me, I am super surprised. I am very happy with the physical condition I am in. My coach told me: I don’t want to see you ahead, you’re going to feel like it, but you’re not going to do anything. I just want the race to finish. I want to work, I want to support as much as I can. It’s not a World Tour level, but I can be there. I can support the team, which was the most important thing.”
