Merz Announces Cabinet Picks, Unveiling Coalition Government with SPD

BERLIN – In a move that solidifies the newly formed coalition government between the christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD), designated Chancellor Friedrich Merz unveiled his cabinet appointments Monday, naming a mix of seasoned politicians and fresh faces to key ministry positions. The announcement, made in Berlin, marks a significant step toward establishing the direction of the country under the new “Schwarz-Rot” (Black-Red) coalition.

The CDU will control seven ministerial posts, including critical portfolios such as economics, education, transportation, and the newly created Ministry for Digital Affairs and State Modernization. This ministry, a key priority for Merz, will be helmed by top manager Karsten Wildberger, a surprise pick from outside the customary political sphere.

Meanwhile, the CDU’s Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), also announced its ministerial selections, securing the Interior Ministry, and also the agriculture and research portfolios.

CSU Secures Interior Ministry, Names Dobrindt as Head

CSU leader Markus Söder announced his party’s picks following a meeting in Munich, emphasizing the importance of experience and competence in the chosen candidates. Alexander Dobrindt, the former head of the CSU’s parliamentary group, will take the helm at the Interior Ministry. Additional Appointments

Several politicians have been tapped for key state secretary positions. These include Philipp amthor and Thomas Jarzombek,who will both serve as Parliamentary State Secretaries in the Digital Ministry.The CSU, also made several appointments of state secretaries including Silke Launert to the agriculture ministry, Daniela Ludwig as Interior State Secretary and Florian Hahn and Ulrich Lange who will become State ministers for Foreign affairs and State Secretary of Transportation respectively.

Reiche’s Return to Politics a Surprise

The nomination of Katherina Reiche as Minister for Economy and Energy has also raised eyebrows. Reiche, 51, entered the Bundestag at just 25 years old and served as a parliamentary state secretary for seven years. A trained chemist, reiche has held leadership positions in the energy sector since leaving parliament in 2015. Her appointment suggests a focus on energy security and a pragmatic approach to germany’s energy transition.

Speaking on social media, Merz championed his selections, writing, “This is our team for Germany: the best for our cabinet.
