He was born September 16,1944,in Monmouth,Illinois,to Harold “Mac” Whiteman and Lillian B. (Potter) Whiteman. He married Maryanne Marine on March 24, 1967, in DeKalb, Illinois.
Whiteman’s survivors include his wife of 58 years, Maryanne Whiteman; two sons, Kirk Whiteman of Lincoln, Illinois, and Garth “Toby” Whiteman (and Tracey) Whiteman of Andalusia. He is also survived by six grandsons-Gentry, Kameron, Jenson, Brody, Jase, and Maddox-and one granddaughter, Piper.A niece, Jennie Nowacki, of Sandy Hook, Connecticut, also survives. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Dean Whiteman.
Whiteman graduated from Warren High School in 1962 and earned a Bachelor of Arts from Monmouth College in 1966, where he belonged to the TKE Fraternity.He later earned a Master of arts from Western Illinois University in Macomb in 1977. His teaching career spanned several area schools, with the bulk of his work in Knoxville school District #202, where he served for more than five decades before retiring in 2001.
In addition to teaching, Whiteman coached extensively. he spent 34 years coaching high school football, 33 years coaching junior high, high school, and college basketball, and 27 years coaching track and field (junior high and high school). He also served for several years as the Knoxville Athletic Director. A charter member of the Illinois High School Football and Basketball Coaches Association, he was a longtime member of the Illinois Athletic Directors Association and was named the Class 1A Outstanding athletic Director for 2000-2001. He was inducted into the Illinois High School football Coaches Hall of Fame in April 2003. After leaving teaching and coaching, he continued to serve the district as a substitute school bus driver for several years.
