Celiac disease in adolescence can lead to situations of discrimination, anxiety or depression due to changes in food at a stage where sociability is key.

In this sense, specialists recommend family accompaniment and that restaurants have options without TACC on their menus, a requirement that was established in the recent regulation of the new Celiac Disease Law.

This disorder affects one in 167 adults and 1 in 80 girls or boys in Argentina, according to data from the Ministry of Health, and the United Nations Organization (UN) set May 5 as World Celiac Disease Day.

”Adolescence is a conflictive stage in itself, more so with a chronic condition that often causes a bit of anguish, for being limited or feeling different, because it is a time when children begin to go out with friends, eat out and this it can cause anxiety, stress and often depression,” said nutritionist Ruth Isabel Sánchez, from the Food and Diet area of ​​the Hospital de Clínicas.

Once the ailment is detected, it is essential “to accompany the family so that they can have gluten-free food at hand and ask beforehand what options are available in the restaurants where they are going to eat in order to lead the daily life of this stage, in the best possible way”, added the specialist.

In this sense, Sánchez remarked that the consumption of natural foods such as meat, vegetables and fruits and the restriction of industrialized products is a very healthy diet for all people, which is why it is generally recommended.

But advice on meal preparation, gluten-free menus and food frying are very important, in addition to physical activity and good sleep, which are healthy for everyone.

What is celiac disease

Celiac disease is a permanent intolerance to gluten, a protein found in wheat, oats, barley and rye (TACC), which affects the small intestine of people with a genetic predisposition.

The condition can appear at any time in life, from the time gluten is added to the diet until late adulthood, and its consumption affects the lining of the intestine and decreases the ability to absorb nutrients.

It can also cause very diverse symptoms, such as digestive problems, anemia, infertility, or even be asymptomatic.

For its detection, in principle, a blood test is required, which includes the Antitransglutaminase IgA antibody. The diagnosis is then confirmed with an intestinal biopsy, which should always be done before starting treatment.

Early detection and timely treatment are essential to avoid long-term secondary complications.

The national government regulated the Celiac Disease Law last Wednesday that establishes the guidelines for the preparation of a safe menu, which should be mandatory in restaurants and various institutions that provide meals and the labeling without TACC in medicines.

In addition, Decree 218/2023 provides for the methodology to set the current amount of coverage of obras sociales and prepaid and established the periodicity with which subsequent updates will be made every 6 months. The amount of coverage will go from $2,672 to $7,806.73 contemplating the basic food basket (CBA), published by INDEC on April 20, 2023.
