Centcom: Destruction of 4 Houthi drones over the Red Sea

Yemen – The US Central Command (Centcom) announced, at dawn on Friday, the destruction of 4 drones launched by the Houthis towards two ships in the Red Sea.

Centcom said on the X platform that the Central Command neutralized, on Thursday evening, four drones launched by the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen.

She added that the drones were targeting an American warship and another belonging to the Washington-led “Guardian of Prosperity” coalition within the Red Sea region, which required self-defense.

Centcom indicated that “no casualties or damage to American ships or coalition forces were reported.”

She explained that these measures are being taken “to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer for the US Navy and commercial ships.”

There was no immediate comment from the Houthi group on Centcom’s statement.

On February 16, the US designation of the Houthi group as an “international terrorist organization” came into effect, in response to its attacks in the Red Sea, according to what the US State Department announced.

The “Guardian of Prosperity” coalition, led by Washington, has been launching raids that it says target Houthi sites in various regions of Yemen, since last January, in response to their attacks in the Red Sea, which was met with a response from the group from time to time.

“In solidarity with Gaza,” which is facing a devastating Israeli war with American support, the Houthis target, with missiles and drones, Israeli cargo ships or those linked to them in the Red Sea.

With the intervention of Washington and London and the tension taking an escalating turn last January, the “Houthi” announced that it now considered all American and British ships among its military targets.
