C’est la vie – A probe will set off to discover the secrets of Venus

The European Space Agency has just confirmed its ambition to send a probe into orbit of Venus in a few years in order to explore this hostile and mysterious planet. The goal is to better understand the constitution and climate of the “twin planet” of the Earth.

EnVision is the name of this orbital probe responsible for studying Venus. The European Space Agency (ESA) confirms its launch, planned for the early 2030s, with the mission of studying this planet, from its core to its outer atmosphere, to better understand its formation and its history. The goal will also be to observe its geological activity and its climate. EnVision will thus be responsible for studying the different gases present in the atmosphere, but also the composition of the surface of Venus as well as its interior structure.

This mission will be carried out in collaboration with the American Space Agency (NASA), particularly with regard to certain instruments on board the orbiter. It will allow us to better understand the differences between Earth and Venus, its closest neighbor in the Solar System but also the most similar in size and mass. Despite everything, its environment is particularly hostile, with its toxic atmosphere and its hot surface (more than 400 degrees Celsius).

Both formed more than four billion years ago, Venus and Earth must have initially been quite similar. We will therefore have to understand the processes that shaped the evolution of Venus. On the other hand, this planet is a formidable laboratory for the climate since its atmosphere is made up of more than 96% carbon dioxide (CO2). By studying the climate of Venus, scientists hope to learn lessons regarding the effects of climate change on Earth. Finally, Venus is rich in natural resources, minerals and metals. Some of these resources might very well be exploited one day.

Note that, over the last fifty years, various American, Soviet and even European missions have already made it possible to paint the picture of an arid and volcanic planet.
