CGSP Cheminots LVHW and CSC Raise Alarm over Safety Issues with Train Departure System

The CGSP Cheminots LVHW (Liège, Verviers, Huy, Welkenraedt) and the CSC denounced on Thursday a danger to staff and passengers following the implementation of a computer system indicating the departure of trains.

“Since February, the crew chiefs have been equipped with a connected watch, from which they give the start,” explains Anthony Signorino-Gelo, permanent secretary CGSP Cheminots LVHW.

Over the past two weeks, three attendants from the Welkenraedt depot have had their license withdrawn, the train having left with open doors or with the agent on the platform.

The problems linked to the Linda system are not confined to Welkenraedt, says Thierry Moers, national secretary CGSP Cheminots.

Several agents involved assure that they did not make an error but that it was rather an equipment failure.

On the SNCB side, we confirm that of the 40,000 daily departures given with this system “a few one-off and localized events have been observed in recent weeks”, indicates the spokesperson, Marianne Hiernaux.

“If the watches continue to give the start without the instructions of the agents, we risk facing security problems, which could endanger the lives of staff and passengers,” insists Anthony Signorino-Gelo.

“The safety of our travelers and our staff being essential, we have started a technical analysis in order to quickly understand the problem and take appropriate measures,” insists the spokesperson.

The unions have initiated an alarm bell procedure aimed at quickly finding a solution with management. A meeting should be held next week.

In the meantime, management will go to the Welkenraedt depot on Friday to meet the agents who noticed this problem.

“We regret that no strong measures have been taken apart from returning certain watches to the supplier,” concludes the permanent secretary.
