With a view to reducing the environmental impact of boilers, France has implemented new regulations for biofuel boilers. This is a heating system powered by a mixture of oil and rapeseed. Despite this measure, biofuel is struggling to establish itself as a credible alternative to traditional fuel oil.
An expensive and difficult transition to achieve
The transition to biofuel faces several obstacles. The gradual establishment of this new sector constitutes the major challenge of this project. In fact, the marketing of the fuel only began in December 2022 and it is not yet widely accessible throughout France. “ There are difficulties supplying three regions currently: Champagne, Île-de-France and Hauts-de-France », Specifies Frédéric Plan, general delegate of the French Federation of Fuels, Fuels and Heating (FF3C). However, the latter provides for a gradual improvement in territorial coverage, and should be total by 2024. This deployment could contribute to the increase in the use of biofuel.
Furthermore, the cost of the latter represents a major obstacle. For the moment, it is 15% higher than traditional fuel oil. This price difference can deter many people, especially in these economically uncertain times marked by high inflation. To stimulate the adoption of biofuel, professionals are trying to find solutions. “ We plead with the public authorities so that there is a tax incentive in order to reduce the price gap between the two », underlined Eric Layly, president of the FF3C.
The French prefer to use their old boilers
The French who already have oil boilers would prefer to use their old boiler than to get a new one at a relatively high cost. According to Frédéric Plan, “pTo accelerate, biofuel should be extended to the current fleet. It is already technically possible by changing the burner and modifying the fuel injection line “. For his part, Pascal Housset, representative of climate engineering, maintenance, roofing and plumbing companies, very much doubts that the French will welcome this initiative with open arms. “ It is in any case illusory to believe that all French people will switch to the heat pump “, he indicated.
You should know that in France, around 3.5 million buildings still use fuel oil for the cold seasons. Among these, and according to 2018 figures which have not been updated by the FF3C, there are 2.8 million individual houses. Fuel oil thus ranks third among the resources used by the French for heating, particularly in rural areas.
