Changan’s Europe Expansion from Spain: Madrid HQ and Potential Aragón Plant

Changan Automobile has established its European headquarters in Alcobendas, Madrid, as part of a strategy to sell 300,000 vehicles across 14 countries by 2028, according to Ethan Yin, the company’s European operations director. The 1,000-square-meter office, shared between Spanish and pan-European operations, houses sales, marketing, and financial functions, serving as a central command for the automaker’s expansion. Yin confirmed that Changan is evaluating potential production sites in Spain, including Aragón, though no final decision has been made.

The company’s European sales targets include 40,000 units in 2024, 100,000 in 2027, and 300,000 by 2028, with Spain aiming for 6,000 sales in 2026. This plan relies on a network of 65 dealers in Spain and over 300 across Europe, with 100 new dealers expected by year’s end. Manuel Pérez Casado, Changan’s commercial director in Spain, emphasized the role of Barcelona’s port as a logistics hub, with Noatum and Kuehne + Nagel managing vehicle imports.

Changan’s 2024 product launch includes the Deepal S05 PHEV, a plug-in hybrid featuring “Ultra-Hybrid” technology designed for European driving patterns. The model offers 100 kilometers of electric range and 1,000 kilometers combined, with a focus on efficiency amid rising energy costs. The Deepal S05 and Deepal 07 SUVs form the current lineup, with four to five new models planned for 2024.

Engineering for the European market is decentralized, with 320 designers based in Europe, including facilities in Turín and München. Collaborations with Bosch, Idiada, and research centers in Birmingham and Milan underpin the company’s localized development. Changan’s global R&D network includes 990 engineers, with a focus on adapting vehicles to European regulatory and consumer demands.

The company’s European expansion follows a broader trend of Chinese automakers seeking footholds in the region. While Changan has not confirmed production plans in Spain, its evaluation of Aragón highlights the region’s industrial infrastructure as a potential candidate. The decision, however, remains pending, with no timeline announced for a final announcement.
