Changes this January 1: a big novelty for video games in Belgium

The tax shelter for video games comes into force on January 1. A great novelty for the sector. This measure, approved by the Federal Parliament and the European Commission, is the result of a long process whose objective is to grow a sector that has received little support until now by giving it access to a new source of financing.

The tax shelter will allow companies to invest, from 2023, part of their profits in the production of a new game in exchange for tax exemption. This tax incentive already exists for cinema and the performing arts. A total of 935 full-time equivalents work in the development of video games in Belgium and the sector earned 88 million euros last year compared to 82 million in 2020.
