Changsha picture book painter Cai Gao Shortlisted for the 2024 International Hans Christian Andersen Award (Illustrator). Cai Gao is the only Chinese illustrator among the finalists. It was her first time to represent China in the “International Andersen Award” and she was shortlisted.

Cai Gao, born in 1946 in Changsha, Hunan, is one of the pioneers of original picture books in China. She has taught in rural primary schools for a long time and worked for Hunan Children’s Publishing House. After retirement, she devoted herself to picture book creation. She is the first picture book artist in China to win the BIB “Golden Apple” Award. She is a selection member of the 34th Bologna International Children’s Picture Book Illustration Exhibition. She won the 2022 “Chen Bochui International Children’s Literature Award Special Contribution Award” and the 2022 Hunan Received the Government Award for Publishing. His representative works include “Learning from His Short Drawings”, “Beautiful Chinese Stories”, “Moon Baba”, “I Will Walk When the Moon Walks”, “Birth Story”, “Bao’er”, etc.

The “International Andersen Award” was founded in 1956 by the International Federation of Children’s Books (IBBY) headquartered in Switzerland. It is named after the fairy tale master Andersen and is selected every two years. The main awards include the Literature Award and the Illustration Award. The purpose of the “International Andersen Award” is to promote children’s reading, enhance the artistic realm of literature and aesthetics, establish children’s positive values, and promote world peace. This highest honor for children’s literature in the world spreads the spirit of Andersen’s fairy tales and promotes world cultural exchanges. In 2016, children’s literature writer Cao Wenxuan became the first Chinese writer to win the award.
