Catalytic Sound presents: On the occasion of Christof Kurzmann’s 60th birthday on September 5th and 6th, 2023 a small international festival took place in the Viennese jazz & music club Porgy & Bess.
Christof Kurzmann is one of 30 musicians in the international collective with musicians from the fields of free jazz, improvisation and contemporary experimental music, which is primarily about exchange and cooperation: on the one hand among each other, among the musicians, but also with the listeners, the audience.
“It has always been essential for me to celebrate the diversity of musical expression in my personal work in various projects, but also with the curating of this festival. In addition to the music genres already mentioned, new music, pop, rock and their border areas will also be represented. Musicians from all over the world are brought to Vienna and meet a wide range of Austrian musicians here.
In addition, I have also been increasingly active as a curator in Vienna in recent years: I present advanced forms of music at Porgy & Bess. Also as part of the international short film festival Vienna Shorts, where I am responsible for the series of live performances at the interface of film and music. These are important contributions to a lively music scene in Vienna.
Disquiet celebrates free improvisation, the duo Schnee presents excerpts of the new live radio play “Schnee von Gesterte”. The ensemble The Magic ID presents chamber music pop songs and the free jazz quartet around the exceptional American saxophonist Ken Vandermark makes its debut in this form. It will be electro-pop with Bernhard Fleischmann, while Helmut Heiland will rock psychedelic with Ocean Rouge.” (Christoph Kurzman)
