This year, France is affected by significant inflation, caused in particular by the war in Ukraine. This price increase weighs heavily on the portfolio of the French but also on that of associations. With the decline in purchasing power, fundraising at supermarket exits is much less successful.
Inflation weighs heavily on the portfolio of the French, but also on that of associations. Due to a drop in purchasing power, collections of donations at the exit of supermarkets are much less successful. Some, which collected 300 kg of donations in one day, no longer even exceed 200 kg. The Secours populaire d’Auriol, in the 13th arrondissement of Paris, is therefore also weakened by inflation. For the occasion, Europe 1 went there.
A vicious circle
In front of his trolley filled to the brim, Yacine, 24, takes inventory. “I took mushrooms, I took vegetables, fruits…”, lists the young man. With only 250 euros per month for food, he had no choice but to register with Secours Populaire. “I went to Secours Populaire because of inflation. This is the third time I have come. These races will be enough for me for 15 days. If it was in a supermarket, it would have cost me 80 euros . There, I paid 2 euros, something that is almost free”, says Yacine.
Like him, more and more people are asking for help because of inflation. But the association is also affected by the rise in prices which prevents it from obtaining as many products as before, explains Louise, the manager of the place. “We still have as much money as before, but it allows us to have less products because the price of products increases with inflation. People who always donate will find it more difficult to buy the products which are more expensive that we really need: hygiene products and baby products too. You may have seen on the shelf, we don’t have size 5 nappies… It’s complicated”, underlines manager. Because of the shortages, Louise even fears that she will have to refuse applications for registration in the near future.
