Chas Newby Last spring, May 23, former bass player Chas Newby died. Even if you played in The Beatles for only a short time, you will never be forgotten.

In December 1960, Ches got a lucky ticket: Beatles bassist Stuart Sutcliffe stayed in Hamburg after the tour to become an artist, and the group was looking for a replacement for him to perform in his native Liverpool. So for two weeks at The Beatles, a young student, Chas Newby from The Blackjacks, played the guitar. But after performing at the Casbah Club, he left the group forever, although John Lennon called him on a new trip to Hamburg.

– Music has never been the main thing in my life. I wanted to be a chemist,” Ches explained in a 2012 interview with the Sunday Mercury. – People don’t believe me, but I don’t regret my decision to leave The Beatles.

Newby became a chemist, taught at school, played golf, sang in the church choir, and even without world fame, he lived quietly and calmly until the age of 81. He was married (his wife Margaret died in 1992), became a father twice, waited for four grandchildren. And of all the Beatles, he only maintained a relationship with George Harrison.
