Ireland is popular with US tech companies because of its low taxes.
The US company OpenAI, best known as the developer of the AI chatbot ChatGPT, has chosen Ireland as the headquarters for its first branch in an EU country. “We are expanding our presence in Europe with a new office in Dublin,” the company said in a blog post on Thursday. There are also plans to further expand the team in Ireland this year.
OpenAI highlighted “the strength of the technology and start-up ecosystem in Dublin or cities such as Cork, Galway and Limerick” and agreed to “work with the (Irish) government on its national artificial intelligence strategy or with industry “to cooperate with start-ups and researchers”. The company is headquartered in San Francisco, California. It opened its first branch outside the US in London in June. Ireland is the choice of many US technology companies for their EU headquarters due to its favorable taxation.
ChatGPT made waves with its release last November and further updates and improvements in the following months. The hype has died down a bit now. OpenAI also faces many critical voices because of the possible ethical and social implications of the use of artificial intelligence.
