ChatGPT Now Creates Custom iMessage and WhatsApp Stickers

OpenAI has rolled out a native feature allowing ChatGPT users to transform any photo, drawing, or pet picture into custom stickers with transparent backgrounds, exporting them directly to iMessage and WhatsApp.

OpenAI Launches Native Sticker Generation and Direct Messaging Export

Inside the Sticker Generation Pipeline

The feature integrates directly into the existing interface architecture of the model. To initiate the workflow, users must navigate to the Images section located within the sidebar of ChatGPT and select the designated Stickers option. From there, raw assets can be imported directly from a local photothèque.

For instance, testing demonstrated that uploading a cropped image with a prompt like “Create an iMessage sticker” not only isolates the subject with a transparent background but also outpaints missing segments—such as the top of a subject’s cropped head—before rendering the final asset.

Cross-Platform Export and Ecosystem Constraints

Once the generation cycle completes, an “Add to chat apps” interface button becomes active. Tapping this element immediately routes the processed assets to supported messaging environments. Currently, integration spans two major communication protocols:

  • Apple iMessage: Supports single or multiple exports. Assets featuring transparent backgrounds integrate seamlessly over conversation bubbles rather than defaulting to standard rectangular bounding boxes. In Apple’s Messages app, these items populate a dedicated ChatGPT section inside the native Stickers carousel.
  • Meta WhatsApp: Requires a minimum bundle of three distinct assets per export action, adhering strictly to platform-side constraints mandated by Meta rather than any software limitation originating from OpenAI. Users can also select an option to save assets directly back to their local photo library.

Remixing Styles and Batch Customization

Beyond basic background extraction, the system handles complex multi-image prompts and stylistic adaptations. Users can upload multiple source files and instruct ChatGPT to remix them into a cohesive batch. Elements can be added or stripped away iteratively via text prompts, transferring artistic styles from reference images or applying specific descriptive parameters.

This capability transforms casual snapshots into stylized cartoon variants with varied facial expressions or props, making it straightforward to build themed sticker packs for group chats or recurring inside jokes without touching professional design software like Adobe Photoshop.

Streamlining Everyday Generative Utility

By collapsing the traditional workflow—which previously required manual background removal, file conversion, and third-party app importing—OpenAI is aggressively reducing friction in everyday generative AI utility. As users test the boundaries of these transparent-background exports on complex visual data, the primary metric for success will remain the consistency of style replication across batch remixes. For now, the direct pipeline from the ChatGPT image generator straight into active messaging threads sets a new benchmark for utility-driven AI features.
