Cheaper Electric Car Insurance: Government Exemption Ends, Prices Rise

-5 to -16% for a Renault Zoé compared to a Clio; -3 to -12% for a Peugeot e-2008 compared to a classic 2008; -9 to -13% for an electric Renault Mégane compared to a classic Mégane. All the examples noted by the Assurland.com comparator prove it: today, insuring an electric car is cheaper than insuring a thermal engine model. The reason ? It is not due to a cause linked to the car itself. But to a “flower” granted by the government: an exemption put in place by the State since January 2021 on insurance contracts taken out for an electric car.

An important exemption: no tax at 33% on civil liability guarantee (third party, the obligatory one), nor at 18% on other guarantees. But those days will soon be a thing of the past.

End of an era…

Franck Le Vallois, Managing Director of France Assureurs, explains why: “This exemption measure introduced in 2021 aimed to encourage citizens to acquire electric vehicles. This was a temporary tax incentive, resulting from the 2020 Citizens’ Climate Convention. As initially planned, this derogation regime will disappear at the end of this year.. Mechanically, insurance will therefore cost more from next January 1: +20 to 25% for a minimum third-party guarantee. +12 to 15% on an all-risk formula.

Return to the previous situation, therefore: an electric car will not cost the same price, but more expensive to insure than a non-electric one. Which makes sense: the cost of insurance roughly reflects the cost of purchasing cars. Electric ones being more expensive, insuring them will also be more expensive.

Another factor explains this additional cost, as Olivier Moustacakis, co-founder of Assurland.com, explains: “In an electric car, you have more aluminum than in a conventional car. Aluminum is an expensive material. And above all, after an accident, there is currently no possibility of checking whether part of the cells making up all the batteries has been damaged or not. The entire battery pack must be changed. Sometimes you have vehicles that are almost new and appear slightly damaged and scrapped after an accident.. All of this is also very expensive for insurers”. A cost which will therefore once again be reflected in the contracts for all French people.
