Cheaper than the Beam: Sonos is working on a budget soundbar

Apparently it can also be used as a surround speaker 2 min read

According to a report, Sonos is preparing to launch a new soundbar. It should cost less than the Beam and is alternatively suitable as a background speaker for a surround setup. However, an HDMI port is said to be missing.

The US medium The Verge has once again received exclusive insider information about an upcoming Sonos product. This time it is an entry-level soundbar with the model designation S36. Internally she is called Fury, but the final name is unclear. She should be under the beam (499 euros) and Arc (999 euros) position and on July 7th appear for 249 US dollars. The local price should probably around 300 euros be. It would be by far the cheapest Sonos soundbar so far. The company is apparently pursuing the strategy of opening up new market segments, as recently in the case of the small Bluetooth speaker Roam.

With dimensions of 550 × 69 × 100 centimeters (L × W × H) it falls almost ten centimeters shorter than the Beam out of. The Verge shows the speaker design on specially made render images, which is quite similar to the Beam. In comparison, however, the reduced number of drivers is noticeable. It will also be available in black or white.

No HDMI port?

Compared to the more expensive models, the company is eliminating features such as integrated microphones, Dolby Atmos support and presumably even the HDMI connection. Only an optical cable is included in the scope of delivery in addition to the power cable. This would limit the soundbar to Dolby Digital Surround and there would also be no HDMI-CEC (Turn on/off with TV, control volume with TV remote control). Since an HDMI connection is common even in the soundbar price range under 200 euros, it remains to be seen whether Sonos will actually save on it.

The Fury can still be expanded to a 5.1 setup with compatible speakers. Appropriately, the company is currently working on one as well cheaper subwoofer and IKEA’s Symfonisk bookshelf speaker is a more affordable alternative to the Sonos One SL despite its recent price increase Symfonisk picture frame (test).

Can not only be used as a soundbar

As an alternative to using the soundbar, according to The Verge, the Fury can even be mounted using a bracket mount vertically on the wall. Two Furys would then act as an Arc or Beam positioned in front of the TV Surround-Paar support. Since the side drivers are slightly angled, they may be suitable for directing Atmos sound more specifically towards the ceiling. Current surround alternatives only have their audio drivers front-facing.
