Checo Pérez’s Unfortunate Exit: Shock and Disappointment at the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix

Not only full but also seething with fervor to see Checo Pérez on the podium, Foro Sol did not even see a lap of the Mexican in competition during the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix.

The only time the fans exploded with enthusiasm was at the recognition lap and a couple of hours before during the drivers’ parade. But other than that, no applause, no shouts for sporting reasons.

The start was experienced with anguish and emotion, seeing on the Forum screens the Mexican pass and at least secure what seemed like third place, that is, go up two positions, just in the first corner. However, a Red Bull was soon seen flying off the track.

“Is he Czech?” “He’s Czech!” Were the distressing questions and incredulous answers among the people. When the caravan of cars reached the Foro Sol curves, almost completing the first lap, the fans confirmed that the only Red Bull was Max Verstappen, who was booed.

The Dutchman had been treated with respect throughout the weekend, but the cries against him sounded like an escape valve for all the fans’ expectations and excitement.

Only at the end, several seconds later, Checo passed by, with the right pontoon clearly broken. Silence already prevailed and the next thing was the screen where the man from Guadalajara, already in the pits, hit the steering wheel in a sign of desperation.

One last hope remained, as it seemed that the mechanics were trying to fix something quickly to send it back to the track.

But the speed of the mechanics’ movements suddenly became gestures that reflected that there was nothing to do, that the car was entering the garage and that Checo was abandoning his Grand Prix when he barely completed a lap, most of it as the last car and no longer able to compete.

FANS WERE IN SHOCK!

“We are not disappointed, we are shocked. But today more than ever we are all Czech,” said one fan.

“It was very fast but very disappointing, very frustrating, we came with all the attitude,” lamented another fan.

Although the Foro Sol fans remained, the stands in front of the pits were half empty just after the incident.

This was happening while Verstappen continued as leader, while Checo was already giving long interviews to the international and national media, as he spent around an hour in the press “corralito”, with a serious countenance but not as distraught as one might think.

“If we had thought about the championship it was an unnecessary risk but today I only thought about winning, a podium in Mexico for me would not have been enough; I just wanted to win and when I saw the opportunity I risked it and I risked maybe too much, but if I were to be in that situation again, I would surely do it again,” Checo justified.
