Consumption is strongly discouraged: these symptoms may occur

    E. coli bacteria belong to the Shiga toxin-producing strain Escherichia coli (STEC). If these get into the human body, it can, according to the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) have serious health consequences. These include organ damage, cerebral hemorrhages and neurological disorders. The E.coli strains STEC and EHEC can also cause bloody diarrhea (hemorrhagic colitis) and kidney failure (hemolytic uremic syndrome).

The incubation period – the time between ingestion of the pathogen and the appearance of the first symptoms – is two to ten days, on average around three to four days. Symptoms range from gastrointestinal distress with mild diarrhea to severe bloody diarrhea, often associated with abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting and fever.

Children under the age of five, older people and people with weakened immune systems are particularly often affected by severe EHEC diseases with bloody diarrhea. Anyone who experiences symptoms after consumption should consult a doctor immediately. Several smoothies are currently affected by a recall – these are on offer at some discounters. (vw)
