Chery capitalizes on new energies and the engines of the future

Clean mobility within the automotive industry is on the rise these days. Indeed, the reduction of energy consumption and the transformation towards low carbon emissions are now the workhorse of car manufacturers, including the Chery brand.

In this global context linked to new energies, the Chinese car manufacturer is continuing to develop the “Chery 4.0 Era All-Domain Power”, a technology that offers several power solutions for thermal, hybrid and electric vehicles. Enough to allow the brand to launch more new products in order to maintain its leadership in its market and to weave its web around the world.

Is it necessary to emphasize that Chery intends to make new advances in terms of clean vehicles and in particular electric ones. Remember that it was in 1999 that the Chinese manufacturer successfully unveiled its first engine. From then on, Chery’s ambitions for independence in research and development took root within the automotive group. Also, the brand’s engine power system has evolved into a third generation. Besides, 9 engines from the Chinese automobile giant won the title of “China Core Ten Best Engines”. Moreover, more than 10 million engines stamped Chery have been sold throughout the world.

At present, three fourth-generation blocks from the Chinese manufacturer, whose thermodynamic development has been completed, have all entered a bench calibration phase. However, Chery did not stop there since the development program for the first fifth-generation engine was recently approved, with its design to be finalized by the end of June. A 1.5-litre GDI turbocharged hybrid block which will equip a new model of the brand by 2024.

Developed in collaboration with AVL, one of the world’s three largest engine manufacturers, this block will technically adopt an i-HEC 4.0 high-efficiency intelligent combustion system, low-pressure EGR technology, friction drag reduction and high-efficiency supercharger technology achieving 43.9% thermal efficiency, the best in the industry. In addition, the preliminary research program on high-efficiency engines conducted by Chery, which adopted pre-chamber jet ignition and lean burn technologies (with a target thermal efficiency greater than 45%) has also reached its goal. objective in the laboratory.

Looking back, on May 18, 2021, Chery officially unveiled a fully functional dedicated hybrid drivetrain dubbed DHT as a world premiere. This technology is the first among Chinese brands to have two motors. It offers 9 riding modes, has 11 gear combinations (the highest number of gears in the world) and is equipped with a twin-shaft drive dubbed TSD which provides a smoother riding experience.

On February 25, 2022, the project for the development and integration of new engines for passenger cars led by Chery Automobile was accepted in Wuhu, China. Also, the brand’s first generation hybrid transmission called 3DHT125 comes to animate the latest Tiggo 8 Pro e+ which was recently launched in China.

On March 5, 2022, the key national R&D project dubbed DHE and related to the Chinese automaker’s hybrid engine development, successfully passed the evaluation of the Ministry of Science and Technology and the expert jury. This hybrid engine project focuses on achieving a high compression ratio Miller cycle and high lean burn combustion. Enough to provide Chery’s mass production engines (G4 and G5) with beautifully crafted technical support.

In addition, the brand will further optimize its dedicated 3-speed hybrid transmissions and install them in mid-size PHEV-type products to fully play their advantageous power. Meanwhile, Chery will also develop dedicated 1-speed hybrid transmissions for urban and compact PHEVs and HEVs. Still, Chery does more than fuel-powered engines and hybrid powertrains. In 2017, the launch of the Chery EQ1, with regard to its design and on-board technology, was favorably received by customers, becoming a bestseller for the brand.

At the “World Manufacturing Convention 2019”, the Chinese automaker exhibited its third-generation hydrogen fuel cell vehicles with 30 kW fuel cells, which can be recharged with hydrogen in just 3 minutes and travel more than 700 kilometers.

“The power architecture of the Chery 4.0 Era All-Domain Power spans fuel, hybrid, electric and hydrogen energy, and essentially includes all known possible roadmaps for automotive power technologies over the next 30 years. Then we will follow a step-by-step strategy and we will continue our foray into the electric vehicle segment,” said a Chery powertrain expert recently.
