China: At least 11 missing from severe floods

11 people are missing in China’s Guangdong province, while about 60,000 residents have been forced to leave their homes due to flooding caused by torrential rains in recent days.

Huge areas in this province of the south China are underwater while rescuers ferry residents in lifeboats to safe havens as several major rivers overflow their banks.

Chinese authorities had warned that the level of a river could reach levels not seen for a century on Monday morning, although their concerns have so far not been confirmed.

Blackouts in over a million households in China’s Guangdong province

Guangzhou, the capital of this Chinese province, as well as smaller cities such as Heyuan and Shaoguan were among those worst hit by the bad weather.

Over the weekend approximately 1.16 million households were left without power, but by last night electricity had been restored to 80% of them.

Incessant rains have canceled or delayed flights at Guangzhou International Airport, while schools remain closed in at least three cities. Dozens of homes across the province collapsed or were damaged, with Chinese authorities estimating the direct economic damage at around $19.8 million.

Bad weather at least until Tuesday in parts of China

According to iefimerida, China’s meteorological service has warned that heavy rain will continue until at least tomorrow Tuesday in Guangdong and coastal areas of neighboring Fujian province, while “moderate to heavy” rain is expected in other parts of the country, including Beijing, Hebei and Fujian.

Last July, Beijing and neighboring provinces were flooded after typhoons from the Pacific Ocean arrived in China. That week the Chinese capital experienced the heaviest rainfall in 140 years.
