BEIJING, May 31 (Xinhua) — China’s death rates among infants, women in pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium fell to a historic low in 2022, the National Health Commission announced at a press conference on Wednesday.

The committee indicated that the death rate of women during pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium in China was 15.7 per 100,000 in 2022.

Infant and under-five mortality rates fell to 4.9 per thousand and 6.8 per thousand respectively, both of which fell to record levels.

The commission said these figures indicate remarkable progress in protecting the rights and health interests of women and children in China.

Song Li, head of the department of maternal and child health of the commission, said China is committed to pushing forward the Healthy China initiative, with a focus on promoting maternal and child health.

Song added that the country pledged to reduce the death rate of women during pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium to less than 12 per 100,000, and the under-five mortality rate to less than 6 per 1,000 by 2030.
