China’s Manned Space Engineering Office postponed the robotic Chang’e-7 lunar exploration mission, originally slated to launch from the Wenchang Space Launch Site on Hainan Island according to statements released by state media.
The Architecture of an Unprecedented Lunar South Pole Attempt
The mission profile for Chang’e-7 is exceptionally complex. According to Wiphu Rujopakarn, executive director of the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) speaking to CNN, no space agency has previously attempted to land a spacecraft directly on the rim of a crater at the lunar south pole. NARIT is among seven international partnerships that contributed research instruments to the probe.
The technical hurdles are steep. The spacecraft must execute an exact orbital insertion to successfully land on the treacherous terrain of the lunar south pole. The mission payload is extensive, consisting of a lunar orbiter, a lander, a rover, and a robotic mini-hopper designed to deploy from the lander, navigate into craters, and drill for water ice.
State media and program officials offered no granular technical explanation for the delay. NARIT’s analysis points to a combination of high-altitude winds from moving weather systems in southern China and the exceptionally narrow annual launch windows.
Shifting Timelines in Cislunar Competition
The postponement impacts the broader geopolitical and commercial space race targeting the moon’s volatile-rich south pole. Both the United States and China view water ice as an essential resource for long-term lunar habitation, capable of being converted into breathable air, drinking water, and rocket propellant.
The delay places NASA and commercial lunar enterprises on a potentially more competitive footing for 2026 and 2027. US-based initiatives targeting the south pole are moving forward rapidly:
- Astrobotic Technologies: The Pittsburgh-based company is slated to launch its Griffin lander to the lunar south pole as early as late 2026.
- Blue Origin: Jeff Bezos’ aerospace venture plans to launch up to robotic landers next year, which may include NASA’s VIPER prospecting rover.
- Intuitive Machines: The Texas-based firm previously attempted a water-hunting drill mission in 2025, though the lander tipped over on the rugged terrain and could not complete its objectives.
Parallel Delays in Planetary Defense
Speaking at the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) 45th Scientific Assembly in Busan, South Korea, Li Mingtao of the National Space Science Center announced that China’s kinetic impactor planetary defense mission has been rescheduled for a 2027 launch, delayed two years from an earlier 2025 target.

The planetary defense mission will target the asteroid 2015 XF261, an estimated 30-meter-wide body. The mission architecture involves two spacecraft launched together on a Long March 3B rocket. An observer spacecraft will execute a Venus flyby before arriving at the asteroid in early 2029, followed three months later by an impactor colliding at a velocity of 10 kilometers per second when the asteroid is within seven million kilometers of Earth.
This impact timing coincides with the close Earth flyby of the near-Earth asteroid Apophis in April 2029. While NASA previously demonstrated the kinetic impactor concept with its 2022 DART mission against Dimorphos, China’s upcoming test on the smaller 2015 XF261 will allow astronomers to measure orbital changes directly, while gathering data on the internal structure of smaller asteroid bodies.
