China may ban Apps that do not share information with the government

China’s government has started requiring all app developers to submit business information to the government. The measure was published by the Ministry of Information and affects all Apps on Android or iOS.

According to the official note, applications without proper registration will be banned after the grace period, which will end in March 2024. The official justification for this tightening of the rules is an alleged fight against online fraud.

However, the ministry’s prior approval requirement is likely to mainly affect foreign developers who publish their Apps easily through the Apple store.

This is because until then these developers were exempt from submitting any documentation to the Chinese government.

Another detail that drew attention is that, in order to comply with Beijing’s requirement, the developers will need to have a company registered in China or work with a local developer.

The ministry note also says:

Entities involved in internet information services through applications in areas such as news, publishing, education, film, television and religion must also submit relevant documents to the government.

For now, Apple has not commented on the matter, but the Cupertino giant removed a number of AI applications recently after the Chinese government announced a new regulatory framework for the segment.

With the measure coming into force in 2024, the company will probably be forced to make a new “clean” in the App Store, since applications like X, Instagram and Facebook will no longer be able to be downloaded.

The use of these Western apps is not allowed in China, but they can be downloaded from the App Store for Chinese people to use abroad or in Hong Kong. From now on, the Chinese “wall” becomes even higher.
