China opposes NATO’s provocation of block clashes around the world

China is firmly opposed to NATO provoking clashes between blocs around the world, Zhang Jun, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, said Thursday at a Security Council briefing on the ‘Ukraine.

“Clinging to an anachronistic security doctrine and seeking to provoke confrontations between blocs and to create tensions in Europe, even in the Asia-Pacific region and in the rest of the world, such practices which are as much harmful to others as deleterious to their authors themselves deserve nothing but China’s firm opposition,” he said.

Referring to the lessons of the Ukraine crisis, Mr. Zhang said that “basing the security of one country on the insecurity of others is neither reasonable nor feasible. NATO’s repeated eastward expansion after the Cold War not only failed to make Europe more secure, but also sowed the seeds of conflict”.

“Contrary to its pretense of being an organization of a defensive nature, NATO has launched wars without reason against sovereign countries, causing colossal losses and humanitarian disasters,” added the ambassador.

On May 7, 1999, NATO fired a number of precision-guided missiles at the Chinese Embassy in Yugoslavia (in Belgrade), killing three Chinese journalists and injuring more than 20 Chinese diplomats.

“The Chinese people will never forget this barbaric atrocity and will never allow such an event to be repeated. Now that the Cold War is behind us, NATO should naturally assess the situation and make necessary adjustments,” Zhang said. .

He felt that the world did not need a new Cold War and could not afford more turmoil and division.

“China solemnly advocates that in order to solve the practical problems of the security of all mankind and seek a long-term solution for world peace, all countries reaffirm their commitment to the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations. , sincerely uphold the principle of the indivisibility of security, forge synergy through consultation, and jointly build a balanced, effective and sustainable global and regional security architecture,” he concluded.
