In response to the Visit of US House Speaker Nancy PelosiTo Taiwan, China announced today, Friday, the suspension of cooperation with the United States in a number of areas, which prompted the latter to respond.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry announced the suspension of military and security talks with Washington, and the cancellation of climate talks as well.
It also announced the suspension of cooperation with the United States on the fight against drugs, and on illegal immigration.
Beijing has also suspended cooperation with the United States on the Maritime Safety Mechanism.
We are ready to respond to any Chinese escalation
On the other hand, the US National Security Council declared that China cannot prevent Washington from operating in the seas and airspace.
He also said, “We are ready to respond to any Chinese escalation.”
Visit less than 24 hours
It is noteworthy that Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the island of Taiwan, which is claimed by China, lasted less than 24 hours, but it angered Beijing.
Beijing considers the initiative of Pelosi, the highest elected US official to visit Taipei in 25 years, as a provocation and a retraction of the promises made by the United States to China.
For her part, Pelosi resolutely emphasized that the United States would not abandon the island, which is under constant threat from the Chinese military.
Washington: Pelosi makes her own decisions
The US administration also assured Beijing of its commitment to the “one China” policy, and distanced itself from Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, saying that the Speaker of the US House of Representatives makes her own decisions.
It is noteworthy that Pelosi’s visit is the first by a US House speaker to Taiwan since 1997, making it the highest US official to visit the island in 25 years.
