Chinampera Tag Drives Product Sales, Protecting the mexican Axolotl
Four organizations were recently honored for championing sustainable practices that directly benefit the endangered Mexican Axolotl, through sales boosted by the Chinampera tag. These awards highlight a growing movement to intertwine commerce with conservation, fostering a committed community around this unique amphibian.
The initiative aims to support the chinamperos, the traditional farmers of Xochimilco, whose agricultural practices are essential to the axolotl’s survival.
Chinampera allies Recognized for Axolotl conservation
The UNAM Store, the Cloister of Sor Juana, el Cardenal Restaurant, and Numu Market Restaurant have all received the chinampera ally recognition for their active support and promotion of sustainable products that contribute to protecting the Mexican Axolotl.
Susana magallón Puebla, Director of the institute of Biology (IB) at UNAM, emphasized that this recognition underscores the critical collaboration between diverse sectors.
Fostering Sustainable Agriculture through Chinampa-Refugio Model
The Chinampa-Refugio ecological restoration model combines food production with the conservation of the axolotl. this innovative approach aims to create a community deeply invested in the well-being of the axolotl.
Luis Zambrano González, head of the LRE, noted that the project is part of broader strategies to preserve the axolotl by engaging chinamperos, restaurants, educational institutions, and the public.
“We are facing a important environmental crisis, and we can’t solve it without stepping outside our comfort zone,” Zambrano González stated.
Global Reach of Adoptaxolotl Campaign
Vania Anaid Mendoza Solís,a student at the LRE,reported that the third edition of Adoptaxolotl 2024-2025 reached individuals in over 60 countries, with the United States providing the most sponsorship.
The campaign allows people to virtually adopt an axolotl, mainly females, and even name them. This fosters a personal connection and encourages greater involvement in the conservation efforts around Xochimilco.
In 2024, 20% of the donations came from Mexico, signaling increased national engagement in preserving this iconic species.
mendoza Solís believes the axolotl’s appearance in the Minecraft video game has boosted its popularity, particularly among young people, driving more interest in their habitat and the urgency of its restoration.
Unlike the previous year where most donors were from America and Europe, this year the campaign reached all continents.
The proceedings as part of the campaign will be invested in the maintenance of the colony of these animals, and is expected to open two new Chinampas-Refugio, in addition to concluding the 2024 axolotl census.
UNAM Store’s Role in Promoting Axolotl Conservation
Juan de Dios González Razo, Director of Operations at the UNAM Store, explained that their online marketing efforts have directly channeled sales of official products into axolotl conservation.
“We know this doesn’t solve all the problems, but it raises awareness and allows society to support the initiative through purchasing power,” González Razo said. The Chinampera tag adds to a plan that UNAM has with more than 130 producers, and a figure greater than 600 manufactures.
The UNAM store operates on fair trade principles and develop sustainable productive chains to accommodate small producers.
The Growing Market for Sustainable Products
The market for sustainably sourced and ethically produced goods is expanding. According to a 2023 report by the NYU Stern Center for Sustainable business, sustainably marketed products accounted for 17% of all consumer packaged goods sales, demonstrating a significant consumer shift toward eco-conscious purchases.
In addition, consumers are increasingly willing to pay a premium for products that have a positive impact.
Initiatives such as the Chinampera tag are not onyl vital for environmental conservation but also align well with the growing consumer demand for sustainable options, creating a win-win scenario for both the environment and local economies.
