[Newtalk新聞] Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin presided over a regular press conference today (18). A reporter asked a question. Recently, foreign media quoted satellite images and said that in recent weeks, China is building an airstrip on Zhongjian Island. Can the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirm this? What is the purpose of building this airport?

Wang Wenbin said, first of all, I would like to point out that relevant reports do not match the facts. Zhongjian Island is part of China’s Xisha Islands and is China’s inherent territory. China’s construction activities on its own territory are legitimate and beyond reproach.

China has recently been engaged in sovereignty disputes with countries in the South China Sea. In addition to conflicts with the Philippines on the Second Thomas Shoal, the construction of an airport in Xisha also threatens the security of neighboring Vietnam.

The confrontation between China and the Philippines in the South China Sea has intensified. The Philippines has cut off the coast guard hotline between the two sides to avoid misunderstandings. It has even threatened that the other side will take necessary military measures if it forcibly dismantles a warship stranded on the sands of the Ren’ai Reef.
