Official data issued by the Chinese National Foreign Exchange Authority showed that the external debt owed by China amounted to 2.38 trillion US dollars at the end of September 2023.

The authority reported that this represents a decrease of 2 percent, or $50.9 billion, from the level recorded at the end of last June.

On Saturday, the New China News Agency (Xinhua) quoted Wang Chunying, deputy director of the authority, as saying that the external debts owed by banks are the main reason behind the recorded decline.

Wang added that the amount of external debt owed by China will remain stable, while the fundamentals of the country’s long-term growth will remain unchanged.
