Chinese health authorities announced on Friday that the country plans to contain monkeypox in the same way it dealt with other infectious diseases such as Covid-19, as of September 20, after recording nearly 500 cases last month.
The National Health Commission said in a statement that monkeypox falls under category (B) and will be dealt with within the framework of the protocols for this category.
Under this category, China can take emergency measures such as banning gatherings, suspending work and schools, or closing some places in the event of an outbreak.
Category B infectious diseases currently include Covid-19, AIDS and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).
The committee said: “More than 20 provinces in China have recorded cases of monkeypox since the first imported case was recorded on September 20, 2022 and the beginning of the spread of infection cases locally in June 2023, which led to the continued spread of the disease and transmission of infection.”
China classifies infectious diseases into 3 categories, and Category A, which is the highest, gives the authorities the right to isolate patients and those in contact with them.
The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention said on September 8 that China recorded 501 new cases of monkeypox in August, with no serious cases or deaths.
The virus was first detected in monkeys, and is transmitted mainly through close contact with an infected person.
In May, the World Health Organization declared that monkeypox no longer represented a global public health emergency.
