China’s president urges measures to protect lives against covid

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday called on authorities to take measures to “effectively protect” the lives of his compatriots in the face of the spread of Covid-19, in his first public statements since Beijing eased health restrictions.

“We should start a more targeted patriotic health campaign to strengthen epidemic prevention and control and effectively protect people’s lives, safety and health,” Xi said, according to state-run CCTV channel.

Three years following the detection of the first cases of covid-19 in the Chinese city of Wuhan (center), the Asian country is facing an explosive increase in the number of people infected with the virus.

Many hospitals are overcrowded and pharmacies face a shortage of medicines.

In addition, officials at several crematoriums reported to AFP a sharp increase in the number of bodies.

China has officially recognized just six deaths from Covid-19 since restrictions were lifted.

Analysts, however, consider that the balance is much lower than the actual number of deaths, in a country where a large number of elderly people are not vaccinated once morest covid-19.
