SHANGHAI, April 21 (Archyde.com) – Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang said on Friday both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to China and it was logical and appropriate for Beijing to defend its sovereignty.
Speaking at a forum in Shanghai, where he discussed a wide range of topics including Taiwan, the senior Chinese diplomat denounced “the absurd rhetoric accusing China of upsetting the status quo, disrupting peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait”.
Qin Gang added that people of good faith could “see who has hegemonic harassment and who has noble practices.”
“It is not territorial China but the separatist powers of Taiwan and a handful of countries that are trying to disrupt the status quo,” he continued. “Those who play with fire on Taiwan will end up getting burned.”
Beijing, which regards Taiwan as a renegade province and does not rule out using force to bring it back, conducted military exercises around the island this month to protest against the meeting in the United States between Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and Speaker of the US House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy.
