During the opening day of the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing on Saturday, advanced bipedal machines built by Beijing-based X-Humanoid shattered human athletic records, clocking a 100-meter sprint in 9.39 seconds and clearing a standing high jump of 2.88 meters to demonstrate surging hardware capabilities amid escalating international trade restrictions.
Engineering Bipedal Agility at the National Speed Skating Oval
The National Speed Skating Oval—originally constructed for the 2022 Winter Olympics—transformed into a high-tech arena for the second annual World Humanoid Robot Games. According to organizers, more than 2,000 humanoid robots participated in the five-day event. The competition features 51 events and over 1,000 competitions, ranging from standard track and field disciplines to soccer and table tennis. Sixteen countries, including Germany, Japan, and the United States, sent entries to compete.
The standout performance of the opening session came from X-Humanoid, a robotics firm headquartered in Beijing. In the 100-meter sprint, an X-Humanoid machine crossed the finish line in 9.39 seconds. That time undercuts the long-standing human world record of 9.58 seconds, which Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt established in 2009. Prior to the official opening, smartphone manufacturer Honor ran a separate trial where its own humanoid platform completed the 100-meter distance even faster, recording a time of 9.32 seconds at a peak velocity of 14.5 meters per second, according to the company.
In the field events, the hardware benchmarks proved equally striking. An X-Humanoid robot cleared 2.88 meters in the standing high jump. That figure easily eclipses the human world record of 2.45 meters set by Cuba’s Javier Sotomayor in 1993, while also representing a leap over the 0.95-meter best result achieved by humanoid entries during the inaugural edition of the games last year.
Geopolitical Pressures and Hardware Supply Chains
These athletic exhibitions arrive against a backdrop of tightening global trade controls. China makes the majority of the world’s humanoid robots, prompting regulatory pushback from Western governments.

Last month, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission announced a ban on imports of new foreign-made humanoid robots. The FCC cited national security reasons in a move that targeted China. Unitree, a prominent Chinese developer of humanoid robots, was recently included by the Pentagon on its roster of enterprises alleged to maintain connections with the Chinese military. Beijing has hit back at the accusations.
The Beijing games opened the same week as the 2026 World Robot Conference, where companies showcased around 3,000 products. Even with strong telemetry results in jumping and sprinting events, industry specialists point out that humanoid machines remain largely confined to research, performances, and public demonstrations for the time being, meaning widespread commercial integration will still require significant time.
Spectator Reactions and Future Competition Events
Public reception at the National Speed Skating Oval reflected a mix of awe and shifting perceptions regarding artificial intelligence and physical automation. Beijing resident and education worker Li Yanfeng shared her evolving perspective on the technology.
“At first, I wasn’t very accepting of artificial intelligence. I was even a bit resistant to it, because of the possibility that it might replace or displace humans,” Li said, noting that seeing the development is unstoppable brought her out to witness the event firsthand. “These sports are perfectly normal for humans, but now robots can do them. I find it amazing,” added spectator Yang Shangzheng.
The competition includes other events such as weightlifting and tug of war.
