On February 2, the Chinese New Year Concert was held at the Library Theater in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. As an important performance event of the “Happy Spring Festival” in 2024, the National Chamber Orchestra of Zhejiang Conservatory of Music presented the Czech audience with a cultural feast with superb acting skills, rich content, and full of Chinese charm. Feng Biao, Chinese Ambassador to the Czech Republic, said in his welcome speech that this concert is not only a cultural feast to celebrate the Chinese New Year, but also the first event to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the Czech Republic. Over the past 75 years, China and the Czech Republic have deepened friendly cooperation, promoted cultural exchanges, deepened mutual understanding, and reaped fruitful results. At a new starting point, China is willing to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with the Czech side in various fields and jointly promote the continuous development of China-Czech friendly relations. I believe that with the joint efforts of both sides, China-Czech relations will have a better future.
At the concert, the artists brought representative repertoire from all over China, including 9 classic works such as the traditional Zhejiang folk song “Tea Picking Dance” and the Jiangnan ditty “Wuxi Scene”. Along with the beautiful melody, the audience seemed to embark on a cultural journey to visit the beautiful scenery and experience the folk customs of various places in China. The orchestra also specially performed the second movement “Missing Hometown” of the “Ninth Symphony” composed by the Czech national treasure composer Dvořák with traditional Chinese instruments. The music’s rich nostalgia for overseas travelers aroused strong resonance among the Czech audience. The Czech Matnik Folk Orchestra served as a guest performer and performed the passionate Czech folk song “Little Barbara’s Sheep” live. Later, young performers from China and the Czech Republic performed the Czech folk song “Dance, Dance,” which attracted bursts of applause and pushed the entire performance to a climax.
Czech audiences spoke highly of the performance. Czech Chinese enthusiast Vaclav Lefur told reporters that this year is his 28th year of learning Chinese and being exposed to Chinese culture. He loves music and can also play the pipa. He is very happy to have the opportunity to enjoy authentic music in Prague again. He was deeply impressed by the performance of Chinese national musical instruments, suona and pipa.
At the event, Peter Vasicek, Chairman of the European Art Union, issued an honorary certificate to Feng Biao, thanked Feng Biao and the Chinese Embassy for their great efforts in helping the Czech and European people understand Chinese culture, and sincerely wished all the Chinese people a prosperous future. Vasicek also awarded the orchestra the “Golden Europe” medal and expressed his gratitude to the artists for their wonderful performance. Over the past 25 years, the European Arts Alliance has awarded this honor to more than 300 artists, groups, cultural institutions and cities in recognition of outstanding artistic and cultural activities.
The concert was co-organized by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China and the Chinese Embassy in the Czech Republic, and co-organized by the Zhejiang Conservatory of Music. It attracted more than 400 people including Czech government officials, friends from all walks of life, diplomatic envoys to the Czech Republic, and representatives of the news media. The National Chamber Orchestra of Zhejiang Conservatory of Music, which undertakes performance tasks, is composed of outstanding professional young folk instrumentalists selected and invited from home and abroad.
This is also the 10th “Happy Spring Festival” event organized by the Chinese Embassy in the Czech Republic.
