Chinese president to miss G20 meeting due to deteriorating relations with India

BEIJING (AP) — Chinese President Xi Jinping will be absent from this week’s G20 summit in India as bilateral relations remain distant, leaving his place to be taken by Premier Li Qiang, the ministry said. of Chinese Foreign Affairs on Monday.

A one-sentence notice on the foreign ministry’s website states: “At the invitation of the government of the Republic of India, Premier Li Qiang of the State Council will attend the 18th G20 Summit to be held in New Delhi, India, on September 9 and 10.

Relations between China and India have soured over their disputed border that three years ago resulted in a violent clash between their forces, killing 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers. They have also had trade disputes and over India’s growing strategic ties with India’s main regional rival, the United States.

India recently overtook China as the world’s most populous country and the two nations are competitors on technology, space exploration and global trade.
