Chinese YMTC sues Micron, from the USA, for violating patents on 3D NAND chips

Leading Chinese flash memory manufacturer YMTC, or Yangtze Memory Technologies Co, is suing Micron Technology for patent infringement. The Chinese company claims that the American company used its intellectual property to develop and produce 3D NAND products, harming competition and maintaining its market share.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, attacks both Micron and its subsidiary Micron Consumer Products, alleging infringement on eight patents related to architectural techniques, power management, operational, and manufacturing systems for 96-, 128-, 176-, and 232-layer 3D NAND chips.

YMTC hopes for a quick resolution to the dispute, while Micron has yet to issue an official statement. The fight rages as U.S. lawmakers draft tighter controls on the export of advanced chipmaking tools.

It is also worth remembering that YMTC, along with 30 other companies, was banned from importing technology from the USA last December. Micron, in turn, seeks to improve its relations with China, planning to invest around US$590 million in expanding its factory in Xi’anin Shaanxi province.

YMTC’s ability to compete globally will depend on its adaptation to increasing U.S. export restrictions, despite having already used about $7 billion in state funding over the past year. Meanwhile, Micron, despite falling revenues, is showing recovery thanks to bets on HBM3 Gen2 products for AI accelerators and anticipates a recovery in sales of consumer memory products next year, driven by PC upgrades.
