Iron Maiden Bids Farewell to Legendary Drummer Nicko McBrain

After final show with Iron Maiden this past weekend

After more than four decades banging the drums for iron maiden, Nicko McBrain finally hung up his sticks. His final performance came on December 7th, concluding Iron Maiden’s “The Future Past” world tour with a show at Allianz Parque in São Paulo, Brazil. Just one day later, the band announced Simon Dawson, a former studio drummer and longtime bandmate of bassist Steve Harris in British Lion, as their new touring drummer.

### A Seamless Transition

Many were initially surprised by the swiftness of McBrain’s exit, but as marked by his last show and the immediate announcement of Dawson. There was a clear plan in place.

### Fighting Fight

McBrain’s departure comes after a time of major health challenges for the drummer. In early 2023, McBrain suffered a stroke with partial paralysis. Though he later shared that he almost certainly, he hadn’t accepted defeat. During a chat on “Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk”, McBrain revealed how happy he was with the choice, although it hurt to go.

“I wasn’t as good as I used to be,” he explains, “I thought it was spur of the moment, and then it became a thing of the past.”
