Chris Paul’s Future Role with the Golden State Warriors: Potential Starter or Sixth Man?

Following the surprise arrival of Chris Paul at Golden State in exchange for Jordan Poole, many questions arose regarding the future role of CP3 with the Warriors. These questions remain relevant a few weeks before the start of training camp, but it is rumored that the Point God could be a starter in the Bay.

Never, during his long career of 18 seasons, Chris Paul started an NBA game on the substitutes’ bench. 1214 matches played, 1214 starts. Will this series end in Golden State? Not sure.

Despite the presence of the essential Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson on the backcourt, CP3 could be part of Steve Kerr’s major five at the start if we are to believe Marc J. Spears ofESPN (via le Good Word with Goodwill podcast).

“I expect him to be a starter. And I think it will be in five-minute sequences. I don’t know if they really want to give him a lot of minutes, but I think they’ll try. Maybe I’m wrong, but that’s what stands out. It’s not an opinion, it’s what I hear. He has always been a starter in his career.”

Chris Paul is expected to start on the Warriors, per @MarcJSpears

“I do expect him to start. I think they’re gonna try it. This isn’t a opinion, this is just what I’m hearing.”

Chris Paul holder, why not. But then what will the Warriors’ five look like?

Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green will be named, and we imagine that Andrew Wiggins will be as well. This means that the Warriors will start with Draymond at 5, in very small ball mode, and pivot Kevon Looney coming off the bench.

Yeah, you have to see eh.

Although he rarely makes the headlines, Looney is extremely valuable to the Warriors through everything he brings to the team: rebounding, hustle, sacrifice, defense… in short, all those things that allow Golden State to perform. If we don’t really have any doubts about the ability of Steph Curry and Klay Thompson to play alongside a great playmaker like Chris Paul, and we are even intrigued by what that could give, we do have some doubts about the balance of the Warriors when Kevon Looney is not on the court. Especially since CP3 is clearly at the end of his career and he is no longer – at 38 years old – the defender he once was.

If nothing seems defined at the moment, and these potential sequences in very small ball mode will be limited in minutes, there is reason to have certain reservations about a possible tenure of Chris Paul. A role of sixth man/boss of the second unit seems more relevant to us, but we are not in Steve Kerr’s shoes.

Looking forward to seeing what the Warriors coach will offer us from October, to try to maximize his roster and play for the NBA title.
