Churchill Downs extends ban on Bob Baffert until 2024

Churchill Downs extends Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert’s suspension through 2024, preventing the two-time Triple Crown winner from entering horses in the Kentuky Derby and other competitions for an additional year.

Churchill Downs Inc. announced Monday that it will continue to ban Baffert through at least calendar year 2024, citing “continued concerns regarding the threat to the safety and integrity of racing at DCI-owned tracks.”

Baffert was initially banned for two years following Kentucky Deby winner Meddina Spirit failed a post-race drug test and was later disqualified.

In a statement, Churchill Downs said Baffert continues to spread “false narratives” regarding Medina Spirit’s failed drug test for a steroid, betamethasone, which is legal in Kentucky but banned on race day.

“A coach who is unwilling to accept responsibility for multiple drug test failures at our most high-profile races cannot be trusted to prevent future misconduct,” CDI said.

The company went on to say that it will reassess Baffert’s status following 2024.
