After thirty-two years, the Kashmir valley is again getting an opportunity to enjoy cinema on the big screen. Srinagar’s first multiplex theater to open this month Shivpora has seating for 520 people in three showrooms.
Theaters were closed in Kashmir in the early 90s due to the increase in terrorist attacks. In the eighties, there were 15 theaters in the valley. All were closed, some of which were turned into security forces camps. Others are hotels and hospitals.
In 1999, Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah’s government attempted to reopen the theaters, but a terrorist attack occurred during the first show; One died. With that it was closed again.
