Cinema: why franchises still dominate the American box office

2023-06-03 06:45:17

Why change a recipe that works? American studios continue to decline their blockbusters at will and the results in theaters prove them right. Over the first five months of 2023, almost all of the top ten box office spots in the United States are occupied by franchise episodes. These largely contribute to the return of the American public to cinemas. In the first quarter, their attendance is only a quarter lower than the first three months of 2019.

In the US top 10 compiled by Comscore, eight sequels – from “Avatar 2” to “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”, via “Fast and Furious X” and “Scream VI”… – thus appear alongside the leader “Super Mario Bros. » and « The Little Mermaid », not a franchise, strictly speaking, but a heroine accustomed to the big screen.
